Investing in Your Business Growth: Shifting Your Perspective on Hiring

It’s no secret that one of the most daunting questions when hiring team members is, “How can I afford the help I need?” Whether you’re considering your first virtual assistant (VA) or bringing an Online Business Manager (OBM) on board to run your business, it often feels like a financial stretch.

Here’s the crux of the matter: you can view hiring in one of two ways – as an expense or as an investment.

Expense Perspective:

When you perceive hiring as an expense, all you see is the money flowing out of your business. It seems like you’re constantly losing money every time you delegate or expand your team.

Investment Perspective:

Instead, we should see hiring as an investment. We must view it through the lens of, “How does this team member contribute to increased revenue in the business?” Every person on your team should be helping your business generate more income.

To clarify, this doesn’t mean that every team member needs to directly bring in clients unless they’re hired for sales or marketing roles. What it means is that each team member should free you up to focus on business growth.

As the CEO, you have a crucial choice to make:

  • Spend your time on daily backend tasks that keep the business running.
  • Spend your time on activities that propel the business forward and boost revenue.

When we view hiring as an investment, we must ask ourselves: “How does this new team member enable me to keep growing and expanding the business?”

For instance:

  • If you’re hiring your first VA, they can take over administrative tasks and free you from the daily grind.
  • If you’re bringing in an OBM, they can create strategic plans, drive essential projects, and work closely with the team to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.

This shift in perspective transforms hiring into an investment. It gives you back the most precious resource – your time – to concentrate on activities that genuinely enhance your business’s profitability.

Here’s the bottom line:

If you don’t dedicate yourself to the growth-focused activities, your team members will indeed feel like an expense because there won’t be any additional revenue.

Every time you hire someone to liberate your time for business growth, you’re making a powerful investment in your business, where the true magic unfolds.
