As we buckle up for the upcoming planning season and turn our gaze towards 2024, it’s essential to anchor our strategies on a rock-solid foundation. Allow me to share some of my go-to questions that can turbocharge your strategic planning:

Q1 – Why? This single-word query is my top pick, my strategic ace up the sleeve. It’s super easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of new ideas and dive into action mode. However, hit the brakes for a moment and ponder: Why? Why does this venture matter? Why choose this moment? How does it mesh with our grand vision? This question, simple yet mighty, ensures our actions are purposeful and steer us towards our objectives.

Q2 – How will we gauge our success? Sharp, clear goals are the bedrock of achievement. Ambiguous aims like “boosting revenue” or “expanding clientele” just don’t make the grade. Be precise. How much revenue increase? How many fresh clients? What’s your ideal working hours layout? The devil’s in the specifics, and setting exact benchmarks allows us to craft a strategy that’s trackable every step of the way.

Q3 – What role do I envision for myself? We often bite off more than we can chew. When planning, it’s crucial to visualize your role in the grand scheme. What do you really yearn to do? Which tasks should you delegate, despite being good at them? As a Certified OBM, I thrive on helping clients peel off duties that no longer align with their focus or deserve their time.

Q4 – Who can outshine me in this? Piggybacking on the last question, as we declutter your responsibilities, think about who could fill these shoes and shine. Instead of just wondering, “Who can I recruit for this?” consider, “Who can outperform me in this area?” This change in viewpoint often uncovers individuals with unique skills and insights that can skyrocket your business.

Q5 – What’s Plan B if this doesn’t fly? While being optimistic is great, a dash of realism is equally important. Mull over the scenario where your goals aren’t met. What’s the fallout for your business, your revenue, and your leadership? Having a backup plan showcases your strategic acumen and readiness for any curveballs.
